2007 Paris Memorial Race Report
A tradition in US on road nitro racing, the Paris Memorial is held every year in mid October at the famous Silver Bowl Raceway in Las Vegas. The race is held in memory and honor of the legendary late Ron Paris. A positive sign of the efforts Ron made was evident by the new faces attending this event. Drivers from as far away as Hawaii and Wisconsin, many of whom had never raced in Las Vegas before, came to town to battle for fastest touring and 1/8th titles.
Qualifying in the touring class was dominated by the road weary Jeffrey ‘JL Racing’ Lin, who had just returned from Taiwan the day before the event. TQ honor in 1/8th went to Garen Hagobian, driving the new Motonica P8R. Not too far behind was Mike Strack, who nearly stole TQ in late qualifying rounds, and ROAR Master’s Champ Mark Sweeney. During both qualifying days, all drivers had plenty of track time before, during, and after qualifying rounds. Racers also got to enjoy trackside catering, excellent track conditions, and good weather.
Saturday night a wind storm blew into town destroying the timing and scoring canopy and dusting the track. By 10:30AM on Sunday, the canopy was put back together and the track thoroughly cleaned and ready for the mains. The touring A-main turned into a 2 man race with Lin pulling away from the field and leading until a tire change at the mid way point. This put Marc Cruz in the lead and he kept it until the end. Strack took third. The 1/8th A-main was also a 2 main battle with Hagobian pulling away early, followed by Ron Calangi, who had showed up the night before and bumped his way to the main. At the 25 minute mark, Hagobian had a comfortable ? lap lead until a collision with a lapped car took him out. This handed the lead to Calangi and he lead Sweeney and Strack until the end. Special mention goes to local driver Sarahi Badillo for taking 5th in both classes.
